Races Worth Watching

Contests Hermosa Beach voters did not cast ballots in, but whose outcomes shape the region.

What’s on the ballot: Alongside the statewide governor, Insurance Commissioner, and Superintendent of Public Instruction races and the countywide Sheriff contest and Measure ER, Hermosa Beach sits in U.S. House District 36, State Senate District 24, and State Assembly District 66; the Senate and Assembly seats are both open this year, making them the local races to watch. The Insurance Commissioner race features termed-out SD-24 Senator Ben Allen, whose district was hit by the Palisades Fire, and the Superintendent race includes AD-66 Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, who left his seat to run for it.

Returns are unofficial and will change as counting continues. The Governor race reflects about three-quarters of precincts partially reporting; the three district contests show all precincts partially reporting, meaning each has reported an initial batch while late mail and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The amber marker shows the apparent top-two finisher, not an official call. Measure ER needs a simple majority to pass and is counted by the Los Angeles County Registrar, not the Secretary of State. Mail ballots postmarked by June 2 are accepted through June 9; results are certified July 10. Sources: California Secretary of State; Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder.
