Person exiting the home, hands raised, at around 8pm

HBPD confirmed on Sunday that an adult male was found dead inside the Strand property last night after gaining entry at the end of a seven hour siege. Also confirmed that this is being investigated as possible homicide. One individual is in custody, identity not released at this stage.

A standoff that involved multi-agency SWAT and K-9 teams lasted over 7 hours at 5th St and The Strand/Hermosa Ave on Saturday. Tonight, one person appears to have been taken into custody following reports of a dead body in the house.

Details are patchy, but at around 8pm one person appeared to surrender, exiting the home with their hands raised. Eyewitnesses reported that officers referred to the suspect as ‘Eleanor’ during the final stages of the standoff, but authorities have not yet confirmed the identity or gender of the person taken into custody.

HBPD said that an initial report came in at 12.37pm, when they responded to a request for a welfare check, after the landlord or agent said that they had not heard from a tenant in over a week. Neighbors apparently mentioned a bad smell coming from a downstairs unit. On arrival, police apparently encountered a person who was not the tenant. That person then allegedly barricaded themselves in the house, claiming to be armed and dangerous. Police did not release the name of the individual, nor did they confirm whether they are male or female.

Police have tonight confirmed the discovery of a dead body at the scene, and LASD have further confirmed that their homicide team have taken charge of the investigation.
