CRIME TIME: July 12-18

Hermosa Beach police responded to 39 reported incidents during the week of July 12-18, marked by a shocking weapons incident involving juveniles and apparent gunfire at the beach, a sustained assault where a suspect chased and repeatedly struck a victim on Pier Avenue, and an e-motorcycle rider who injured officers while resisting arrest.

Beach Gunfire Incident

Friday evening at 18th Street and The Strand, a group of juveniles on the beach apparently fired shots from a gun. Multiple groups were attempted to be detained by police, but several juveniles fled on foot. Officers managed to catch a couple of subjects and located two handguns after searching the area.

Violent Chase and Assault

Tuesday afternoon on Pier Avenue, a suspect chased a victim, striking him multiple times and throwing his shoe out into the intersection. The victim attempted to get away but was struck multiple times by the suspect during the pursuit. The suspect was located and arrested for public intoxication and battery.

E-Motorcycle Resisting Arrest Injures Officers

Tuesday evening at Artesia Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, a subject was speeding on an e-motorcycle and resisted arrest, injuring officers in the process. The subject was arrested for multiple charges including operating a motorcycle without a helmet, unsafe speed, no registration, and resisting arrest.

Parking Garage Burglaries

Two burglaries targeted bikes in secured parking locations. Thursday between July 10-11, a bicycle was stolen from a locked garage on the 600 block of 2nd Street. Thursday on the 600 block of 4th Street, an e-bike and cooler were stolen from a parking garage. Sunday on the 1800 block of Pacific Coast Highway, a locked bicycle was stolen from a garage.

E-Bike Theft Epidemic

Four additional e-bikes were targeted during the week. Tuesday at the 100 block of The Strand, a locked e-bike was stolen from a bike rack. Wednesday at the 00 block of Pier Avenue, a helmet and decorative plates were stolen from e-bikes. Friday on the 1100 block of Pacific Coast Highway, a locked e-bike was stolen.

Assaults

Tuesday at 8th Street, a verbal argument at a memorial escalated and one person struck the other.

Vehicle Break-Ins

Tuesday evening on Hermosa Avenue and 9th Court, a rear passenger window was shattered and a backpack stolen. Another window was also damaged.

Bomb Threat

Wednesday evening on the 500 block of Pier Avenue, a bomb threat was called in. The beach was searched with nothing found. This marks the second bomb threat in recent weeks, disrupting beach operations.

Identity Theft & Fraud

Two subjects used a victim's address without permission on the 600 block of 5th Street, with mailings coming in suspect's names. A divorced couple on the 1200 block of Corona Street engaged in fraud when one subject used the other's account to make purchases without permission. Checks mailed were intercepted, washed, and cashed to other recipients on the 500 block of 21st Street.

Vehicle Theft

A phone was stolen from a purse on the 00 block of Pier Avenue.

Quality of Life

Two public intoxication arrests were made during the week. Two public urination citations were issued.

Traffic Enforcement

Multiple citations were issued for driving on suspended or revoked licenses and expired registration.

A male juvenile on an electric motorcycle was cited for speeding, unsafe manner, and evading police by refusing to stop for an officer on Artesia Boulevard and Ford Avenue in the Redondo Beach area.
