Appeal launched after Mickey's Deli favorite Gonzalo Diaz suffered a stroke
Nearly 100 community members gathered at the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Hall on Saturday, September 27, for an evening of celebration as the local service club installed new leadership and honored dedicated volunteers at its annual leadership and honors dinner.
In a ceremony that highlighted the organization's strong connection to city leadership, Hermosa Beach Mayor Rob Saemann was sworn in as the new president of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club.
Outgoing president Rick Koenig stepped into an expanded leadership role, being installed as Lieutenant Governor for Division 19, which represents Kiwanis clubs spanning from Malibu to Lomita. Kiwanis Governor Steve Geraci presided over Koenig's installation, recognizing his years of dedicated service to both the organization and the Hermosa Beach community.
Koenig's contributions were further acknowledged when he received the Secretary's Award for "exceptional dedication," presented by Ann Gotthoffer. Julie Claflin was honored with the Golden Flamingo Award as she retires after seven years of service as the club's treasurer.
The evening featured live music and fine dining, with cuisine prepared by chef Raphael Soloranzo, owner of Salsaverdes in Palos Verdes.
"Saturday night was a true reflection of what Kiwanis stands for—service, fellowship, and community," one attendee remarked. "It was inspiring to see leaders we know and respect take on these important roles."

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Founded in 1915, Kiwanis has grown to include nearly 600,000 members in more than 80 countries and geographic areas worldwide. The organization's mission focuses on serving the children of the world, with members working on projects ranging from youth mentorship and scholarship programs to fighting childhood diseases and hunger.
The Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club has been a cornerstone of local community service for nearly a century, carrying forward this international mission on our hometown streets. Local Kiwanians support Hermosa Beach through various initiatives including youth programs, scholarships for local students, community events, and partnerships with schools and civic organizations. The club exemplifies the Kiwanis motto: "Serving the Children of the World."
Through fundraising efforts and volunteer hours, the Hermosa Beach chapter works year-round to make a positive impact on young people's lives while fostering fellowship among community-minded residents who share a commitment to service.
With fresh leadership at the helm and an energized membership, the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club looks forward to its centenary year in 2026. New club president Rob Saemann reminded everyone of the important work that the club does in the community, and also of the sense of pride and friendship that new members experience. He spoke of those new to the community, and those who find themselves with a 'hole in their lives' through retirement or bereavement, and how rewarding Kiwanis membership can be for them.
