Assault Sends Victim to Hospital
The most serious incident of the week occurred on Thursday night, November 21, when a victim was assaulted by a group of subjects at 11th Court and Beach Drive. The victim required transport for medical care.
The police report log provides limited details about the attack, including no information about the number of assailants, what precipitated the assault, or whether any arrests were made. The incident remains under investigation. This is believed to be the incident that has been widely reported on social media, in The Hermosa Review, and is the subject of three official Police updates. Two juveniles have subsequently been arrested in connection.
Property Crime
The week saw several theft incidents across the city. One occurred overnight between November 19-20 when a computer was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Ardmore Avenue. Police continue to remind residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables.
An e-bike was stolen from a locked storage area at a residence in the 00 block of 21st Court sometime between November 14-16.
On November 21, police arrested a shoplifting suspect at a store in the 100 block of Pacific Coast Highway after the subject took various items and left without paying. The suspect was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.
In another retail theft incident on November 21, two subjects entered a business in the 3100 block of Manhattan Avenue where one concealed alcohol while the other paid for food items at the counter. When confronted, one suspect claimed the alcohol had been replaced, but video evidence showed it was stolen.
Police also are investigating a long-running identity theft case, with an unknown subject using a victim's identity to open multiple credit accounts over several years. The victim, who lives in the 500 block of Monterey Boulevard, reported the fraud on November 21.
DUI and Traffic Violations
Police made two DUI arrests during the week. One occurred early Friday morning on November 22 at 2nd Street and Manhattan Avenue around 3:07 AM. The other was in Area 3 on November 15 on Pacific Coast Highway.
Multiple drivers were cited for driving without a valid license or with suspended/revoked licenses throughout the week. One traffic stop on November 15 at 1200 Hermosa Avenue escalated when the passenger became erratic and argumentative, resisting arrest. A search of the vehicle found items in other people's names, and both occupants were arrested.
In a more unusual incident, an officer on November 22 observed a subject riding a Surron E-moto Motorcycle while using a cell phone in the 1600 block of Hermosa Avenue. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled and evaded police.
Public Intoxication and Quality of Life
Police made two arrests for public intoxication during the week—one on November 16 in the 500 block of Pier Avenue and another early on November 21 in the 00 block of 11th Street.
Two citations were issued for public urination in the early morning hours of November 22, one in the 00 block of 11th Street and another in the 1100 block of Hermosa Avenue.
Other Incidents
Police responded to a missing person report on November 16 in the 2500 block of Valley Drive. While the person was not located, a vehicle registered to the individual was found. The person remains missing.
On a positive note, police recovered and logged several items of found property including bicycles, a wallet, a backpack, and a driver's license, all found between November 17-20.
