Council Signals Support for Nike Run, But Won't Just Do It

Council stops short of outright approval for Nike event, looking for additional financial support and reassurances over disruption to residents and businesses

The Hermosa Beach City Council signaled cautious support for moving forward with the Nike After Dark Tour LA 2026 — a women's nighttime half marathon that would run through the heart of the city — but stopped short of a final green light Tuesday night, directing staff to return with a more fully negotiated deal at its April 14 meeting.

The unanimous vote to continue the public hearing reflected a council that was broadly enthusiastic about the event but united in wanting better answers on resident impacts, financial terms, and how Hermosa's compensation package would compare to neighboring cities also involved in the race.

What's Proposed

Nike organizers are seeking city approval to route a 13.1-mile women's race through Hermosa Beach on either October 17 or October 24. The event — billed as a nighttime running experience, with waves launching between approximately 5 and 5:40 p.m. and runners finishing by 10 p.m. — would begin and end in Redondo Beach, passing through Torrance before entering Hermosa and returning south along the Strand.
